My reason for being part of Breastfest Manchester 2019 is five years old, her name is Luanna and she is my granddaughter.
She asked me 'Grandma why do you only have one boob?' I told her it was poorly and the doctors took it away to make Grandma better. A simple and truthful answer satisfied her but the conversation broke me. I have had to look our children in the eyes and see their distress at being told I had Breast Cancer. We had already rocked their world a few weeks earlier by telling them my partner had cancer too.
Luanna became my reason to live, she was my inspiration and she kept me going. On weekend sleepovers she would sneak into my bed and say 'Grandma your hair has fallen off' as my wig lay on the dressing table! Out of the mouths of babes as they say!
I don't want Luanna to go through what I have, I don't want her to have to answer the same questions from her children and grandchildren. I don't want my sister and my nieces to go through this, nor my step daughter and daughter in law. I want a breast cancer free future for all.
The message is clear and simple...…...
CHECK YOUR BOOBEES!
